The Bayon

The Bayon is like nothing else! From a distance it looks like blackened ruins, freshly burnt. Throughout the three-leveled structure are these eerie faces, presumably of Jayavarman VII, of greatly differing sizes but all with the same expression. My guidebook described that expression as "ambivalent, compassionate, and cruel" and I agree. The Bayon was my favorite temple.
